2 High School Chinese Teachers proclaimed as Ambassadors of the Learning Chinese is Fun Movement
Two Chinese teachers from St. Stephen’s High School, Dr. Ulysses Yu and Ms. Anabeth de la Cruz were awarded as Ambassadors during the 1st Learning Chinese is Fun Movement Search for Ambassadors Awarding Ceremony at CKS College Auditorium on March 11, 2017.
The Learning Chinese is Fun Movement (LCFM), is a parents-initiated endeavour with “Godfathers” who are industry leaders. They willingly offered time, expertise and/or money to ensure the success of its projects. In the early part of 2016, the Search for Learning Chinese is Fun Ambassador Project was open to all Chinese-Filipino Schools in Greater Manila area.
The two teachers, Dr. Yu and Ms. De la Cruz, underwent thorough processes before being officially selected as Ambassadors of the said movement. The search started with the nomination phase around February, 2016. On May 29 to June 11 last year, both of them attended an all-expenses paid ”Training of the Trainors’’ the second phase, which was held at Sun Yat Sen University. Together with other trainors from Philippines and some Southeast Asian teachers, a rigid training with various professional courses was provided to further enhance their teaching skills. The training was part of the benefits of the teacher-nominees who qualified for the Learning Chinese is Fun 2016 Ambassador search. The training aims to equip, enrich and encourage Chinese language teachers to make Chinese language learning fun for the next generation Chinese-Filipino youth.
The teacher training was made possible with the support of Confucius Institute – Ateneo de Manila University while Cebu Pacific Air provided for the flights to and from the training venue. Other sponsors of the Learning Chinese is Fun Movement are the Business Innovation Group, Crescendo Music, East West Bank and the Gosingtian Forum (Diamond sponsors); Anvil Business Club, Chinoy TV and Microdata (Silver sponsors). Several individuals from the Chinese-Filipino community also supported this social change endeavor.
After the training, the two were among the 20 semi-finalists chosen from the 29 qualified nominees and had their teaching demo in CKS College on November 22, 2016. During the Awarding Ceremony, the two were nominated as the Top 10 finalists and given a plaque in recognition of this. Towards the end of the program, both of them emerged as 2 of the Top 5 Ambassadors of this movement. They do not only brought home a trophy and cash prize of 200,000, but also honor to the school.
Learning Chinese is Fun Movement 2016 Ambassador Search is endorsed by the Association of Chinese-Filipino Schools in the Philippines (ACFSP), the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Alumni Association Inc. (FFCAAI) and the Binondo Heritage Group.
Through this project, the Learning Chinese is Fun Movement hopes to enhance the quality of Chinese language education in the Philippines. It also aims to encourage greater interest in and appreciation for Chinese heritage among Chinese-Filipino school students, through effective Chinese language skills.”
